# How do you fix the incompatibility between Google XML Sitemaps and our sitemap generator plugins?

If we want to use any of our sitemap generator plugins, such as [**APG Google Image Sitemap Feed**](https://artprojectgroup.com/wordpress-plugins/apg-google-image-sitemap-feed), [**APG Google Image Sitemap Feed**](https://artprojectgroup.com/wordpress-plugins/apg-google-image-sitemap-feed) or [**APG Google Video Sitemap Feed**](https://artprojectgroup.com/wordpress-plugins/apg-google-video-sitemap-feed), together with [Google XML Sitemaps](https://www.arnebrachhold.de/projects/wordpress-plugins/google-xml-sitemaps-generator/), at least in its 4.0beta11 version, which is the one we use at **APG**, we are going to run into a serious incompatibility problem, which means that none of the sitemaps our plugins generate will work.

The problem arises because the plugin by [Arne Brachhold](https://profiles.wordpress.org/arnee/) monopolises all the redirects available for the virtual sitemap.xml files. The problem is caused specifically by the virtual redirect that uses the regular expression ‘sitemap(-+([a-zA-Z0-9_-]+))?.xml’.

### So how can we fix it?

The truth is that the solution is as simple as installing the [Rewrite](https://wordpress.org/plugins/rewrite/) plugin by [Takien](https://profiles.wordpress.org/takien/). Once it is installed, a new option called Rewrite will appear in the left-hand menu. When we select it, a screen will appear looking like the one we can see on the right, and on it we will only have to reorder the redirects of the various sitemaps simply by clicking them, dragging them and dropping them at the very top of the list. Once everything is finished it should look similar to the way it is shown in the screenshot that goes with this post; we click the *Save & Flush Rules* button, and that is it, everything now works as it should.

We have sometimes run into problems with this plugin and, although we have already reported some of them to the author, so far he has done nothing to fix them, so it is likely that in the future, if all the problems detected are not sorted out, we will end up fixing and improving this plugin by creating a new one out of it. Most of the problems are solved in the *Option* tab by selecting *Disable rewrite*, saving and going back to the *Rewrite* tab. Once the changes we describe have been made and saved, we have to go back to *Option* to deselect *Disable rewrite* and save again. Normally, doing it this way, it usually always works. If even so it still does not work properly, we will only have one radical solution left, which is to delete from the *wp_options* table the record whose *option_name* field is called *rewrite_rules_save*. Once it is deleted we do what is described in this last paragraph again and we try to reorder the rewrite rules once more.

In any case we are trying to make all these fixes automatically from the plugins themselves but, for the time being, we have not managed to do it. So, for now, this is the only solution we can offer you.

We hope the proposed fix is useful and easy for you. Do tell us about your experiences and impressions in the comments.
