As you will already know, our free plugin for WooCommerce, WC - APG City is designed to add to WooCommerce the feature of autocompleting or detecting the customer’s city when the postcode is entered, based on the GeoNames or Google Maps API. This automation helps to reduce errors in the address, speed up the checkout process and improve the user experience.
Until the release of version 1.4, WC - APG City used the GeoNames API anonymously. However, a few days ago this option stopped being operational without prior notice, which caused the plugin to stop working in all the online shops that depended on GeoNames instead of Google Maps.
For that reason we have been obliged to release an emergency update, which incorporates a new field for entering the GeoNames username. Obtaining this user is extraordinarily simple and completely free: you only have to visit the GeoNames website and complete the account creation form.
Once the username has been entered in the new field, you will see that the plugin works again with no problem at all, exactly as before the ban on anonymous use of the API.
Another notable feature, incorporated in version 1.3 and which has gone somewhat unnoticed, is the possibility of locking the city and province fields, preventing the customer from being able to modify them manually under any circumstances, unlike the plugin’s default option. In that same version we completely rewrote the JavaScript code to make it more robust, efficient and simple to maintain.
We hope you find these new features useful and that they allow you to continue using WC - APG City with the peace of mind that it continues to be a completely operational, reliable and constantly evolving plugin.
