APG Google Video Sitemap Feed improves its performance

After several problems found along the way, we have finally finished the modifications to the source code of the APG plugin APG Google Video Sitemap Feed which have noticeably improved its performance, although we are still not altogether satisfied.

We have added support for the WordPress Transients API, which caches the database queries made by the plugin, thereby increasing its performance, those queries being renewed only when a post or a page is published, deleted or updated, or once 30 days have gone by since they were stored.

We have also created a new table in the database to store the data queried remotely from the YouTube, Dailymotion and Vimeo APIs in order to avoid unnecessary external queries. This database is renewed automatically, and completely autonomously, every 30 days.

In the event that APG Google Video Sitemap Feed is deleted, it removes both the Transients cache and the new table added to the database, so its uninstallation is completely clean.

Lastly, we have created a control system for videos that have been deleted or marked as private, which will send us an email completely automatically every time it detects one of these “ghost” videos. In the email we will receive the URL of the post where the deleted URL has been detected and the id of the video so that we can locate it quickly in the event that the post had several of them embedded or linked.

We hope that with these changes the response time for the generation of the sitemap-video.xml file improves noticeably, since until now, on websites with a large number of videos, it is rather slow, although we have not managed yet to make it as fast as we want, so we will go on working to speed up the generation of thesitemap-video.xml as much as possible.
