Today the latest version of WordPress has been released, specifically version 4.5, which has been named Coleman in honour of the American jazz saxophonist and clarinettist Coleman Hawkins. You already know how fond of jazz the people at WordPress are.
The truth is that the new features this 4.5 version brings with it are not very eye-catching, but they are sure to delight many of you.
New features
The most visible new features are four:
- Links: when it comes to including a link in the description, a pop-up layer now appears in which you can quickly and easily select links to the content of the website itself.
- Editing shortcuts: if you type three hyphens (—) in the visual editor, it will add a horizontal rule (HR) for you, and if you type text between backticks (`) it will automatically be turned into code (CODE).
- Responsive preview: you can now see how the live changes made in Appearance -> Customise will look on different devices: desktop, tablet and mobile.
- Custom logo: on themes that support it you will be able to add your logo even more easily.
But there are others that are not so obvious:
- Image resizing: it is now faster, by up to 50%, and with no loss of quality.
- Preview: they have also made several improvements, besides the one already mentioned, in this section.
- Script loading: the management of script dependencies has been improved and the
wp_add_inline_script()function has been added, which will make life much easier for us developers. - Embedded entries: their management has been improved and they have been separated into different parts that can be overwritten by the theme itself.
- JavaScript libraries: they have been updated to jQuery 1.12.3, jQuery Migrate 1.4.0, Backbone 1.2.3 and Underscore 1.8.3.
If you want to see all the new features in detail you can do so on WordPress.org.
We hope you like the new contributions this version of WordPress has given to your websites.
