For barely a few hours now we have been able to update our websites to the new WordPress 4.4, named Clifford in honour of the jazz trumpeter Clifford Brown.
Among its new features, four stand out to our taste:
Responsive images: from WordPress 4.4 onwards the images we add to our entries or pages will automatically adapt to the size of the screen of the device they are viewed on. At last responsive design has been added to images.
- Embedded content: in this new version of WordPress you can embed entries from any website built on WordPress directly, simply by adding its URL in the editor; the title, the excerpt and the featured image will appear automatically, as well as the website icon, a link to the comments and a link to share it. You can also add content from Cloudup, Reditt, ReverbNation, Speaker Deck and VideoPress, which are added to the oEmbed providers already supported in earlier versions. Once again it is still necessary to use plugins such as Fluid Video Embeds to make embedded videos responsive.
- Metadata in taxonomies: thanks to three new functions, in WordPress 4.4 we will be able to add metadata to categories and tags without needing to install any plugin for it. This opens up an immense range of possibilities for taking taxonomies to a new level.
- REST API: in WordPress 4.4 the infrastructure for the WP REST API has been added to the core itself, although the REST API will not be fully integrated until version 4.5, probably. For the time being you must carry on making use of the official plugin. As you already know, thanks to this new REST API we WordPress developers can integrate the CMS with third-party tools much more easily.
On top of these four great new features, a new theme called Twenty Sixteen has also been added, joining the now classic Twenty Fifteen, Twenty Fourteen and Twenty Thirteen, among others. Comment queries have also been improved with new arguments in WP_Comment_Query, and the WP_Term, WP_Comment and WP_Network objects have been improved.
The truth is that at APG we are delighted with this new version of WordPress and we believe that the path taken with the integration of the REST API into the core is the right one. Let us wait impatiently to see what future versions of WordPress bring us in this respect.
